Snowy River National Park

Some of Victoria's most spectacular river scenery, magnificent gorges and forests make Snowy River an outstanding national park.  The park covers an area of 95,290 ha, protecting Victoria's largest forest wilderness.

In the north, the Bowen Range and Gelantipy Plateau dominate.  Flowing south to the Snowy are the rugged waterways of Mountain Creek and the Rodger River. Vegetation in the park varies from dry rainshadow woodland to ancient forests and sub-alpine woodland.  the rich fauna of the area reflects this diversity.

Alpine National Park

At 107,000 ha, the Cobberas-Tingaringy Unit of the Alpine National Park is one of the largest national park areas in Victoria, and few are more remote from settlements.  Its name combines two of its principal mountains - the Cobberas in the east and Mt Tingaringy in the east.  The park adjoins Kosciusko National Park along its northern boundary and Snowy River National Park to the south, and is thus in the heart of the Australian Alps.

The main features of the park's rugged landscape are part of the magnificent Snowy River Valley and one of its major Victorian tributaries, the Suggan Buggan River; the headwaters and upper reaches of the Murray River; and spectacular peaks including Cobberas No 1 (1,838 metres) and Mt Tingaringly (1,448 metres).  Vegetation ranges from Snow Gum woodlands and Alpine Ash forest at higher elevations to Cypress Pine and White Box woodlands in the much lower, warm, dry country of the Snowy River and Suggan Buggan valleys.
